What is influence and what does it have to do with anything?

Well, we have all heard the saying; “Money makes the world go round” but what happens when a person with little or no street credibility makes money? When we see situations like this, it brings our attention to the importance of “influence” because influence is what makes a person truly successful.

Influence for the sake of this article is defined as “An action exerted by a person or thing with such power on another to cause change.” The world today is run by people of influence, not wealthy people. The people who become National and Global figures are not people who are just rich, but they are people who are very influential such that their names when mentioned in a room have the power to change certain things.

Success is what we are all about and that is why it is important that we learn all that we need to know in order to become truly successful. As you aim for the top for the top in your career, what are you doing about how you influence other people in a positive way? In a way that makes them speak highly of you even when you are not there, because you see, no matter how talented you are, you need other people to help you get to the top. If you are one of those people that do not care whose toes you step on as you make your way to the top, then this community is not for you because you are setting yourself up for a very short-lived success and nobody wants that because we are in this for the long-haul. So what can you do to ensure that you have influence? We have a short list which are some practical steps you can begin to take today as we prepare for the New-year;

  • Treat other people as important regardless of their social status
  • Acknowledge the strengths of other people especially in areas that you have a weakness
  • Never take sides when you have to resolve a conflict between two parties. Give each party a fair hearing and point out what each did wrong and what they did right. When you do this, neither of the parties involved will feel cheated.
  • This next point is a quote from Late Author Dale Carnegie’s Bestselling book; “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. In one of the Chapters he said “A person’s name is to him the sweetest melody.” This simply means, always remember people’s first names and address them by it, it makes them feel like they matter.
  • Learn to genuinely care about other people because a little kindness will leave a lasting impression.
  • Last but definitely not the least, learn to speak well of other people without malice especially when they are not there. When people know that they can leave a room and not be bashed in their absence because you are there, they will go over and beyond for you when it matters.

 

So these six suggestions have worked over the years and are still working for the most influential people on the planet. Don’t take our word for it, try them consistently for at least six months and let us know your results. As Professor Magnus Kpakol says, “Our behaviors have a huge impact on how successful we become in life because they can either make or break us.” So, here we see how our behavior towards other people impacts our influence on them which will ultimately impact how successful we become as people.
